Types of Septic Systems
Gravity Fed Septic System
- Consists of a septic tank and a leach field.
- Wastewater from the house flows into the septic tank, where solids settle and bacteria break down organic matter.
- Liquid effluent then moves to the leach field for absorption into the soil.
Dosing System
Dosing systems use gravity to flow the effluent from the house to the tank, and an additional tank is installed called a dosing or a pump chamber. This chamber has an electric pump in it and allows for the liquid effluent to accumulate until it is pumped to a distribution box. Where it is then evenly distributed to the leach field. These systems can be used when the water table is high or the slope of the land will not allow for a gravity system.
Pressure Dosing System
Pressure dosing systems are similar to dosing systems where the effluent gravity flows the house to the septic tank then into a pump chamber, but the difference is in the leach field. The effluent is pumped from the pump chamber to a series of pipelines in the leach field. These pipelines have holes drilled in them at certain intervals that allow for the effluent to be absorbed into the leach field. These systems can be used when the soils need to over-excavated and a sand bed is installed. Also, when the size of the leach field needs to be reduced due to constraints on the property a pressure dosing system is installed.
Mound System
- Suitable for areas with high water tables or poor soil conditions.
- Involves building an above-ground mound filled with sand or gravel, over which effluent is dispersed for filtration and treatment.
Chamber System
- Replaces traditional leach fields with plastic chambers.
- Provides increased surface area for effluent to be absorbed into the soil.
Sand Filter System
- Incorporates a sand bed for additional treatment before effluent enters the soil.
- Effective in areas with insufficient soil permeability.
